Dear Jack Ahern,
Two and a half months ago,
when the Mayor's Charter Commission announced its plan to
disenfranchise voters and trample the Democratic process,
New York City's labor movement stood strong and immediately
said NO.
Despite being outspent and
facing an obvious uphill battle we formed a powerful
coalition that put the interests of working families
first. Countless trade union members from across the
five boroughs volunteered their time and energy, helping
spread the word and creating a massive "Get Out The
Vote" campaign which translated to a 40% victory
margin. Our presence was felt in every neighborhood
throughout our great City.
We reaffirmed to all New
Yorkers that organized labor is a force to be reckoned with
and that our voices cannot be silenced. When others
ran from the fight, we stood strong and defended the values
of working men and women.
I have received numerous
phone calls thanking the trade union movement for its yeomen
like efforts and ask you to convey to your members the
significance of what they have accomplished. Their
hard work proved once again that people are what really
matters - not money.
We have a lot to be proud
of and, together we will work just as hard to build upon
these successes to build a better New York.
Sincerely and fraternally,
